Sweden Voices Concern of US Policies
Addressing parliament during the presentation of Sweden’s annual foreign policy statement, Maria Malmer Stenergard pointed to what she described as a troubling shift in American behavior.
“It is obvious that the US is increasingly acting in a way that is damaging to trust and that contradicts Europe’s values of global cooperation and international law,” Maria Malmer Stenergard said while presenting Sweden’s annual foreign policy declaration in parliament, according to SVT.
Even so, she emphasized that the United States remains a cornerstone of security and economic stability for both Sweden and Europe, underscoring the continued strategic importance of transatlantic ties.
Reiterating Stockholm’s firm position on sovereignty, she declared that Sweden would "never compromise on the territorial integrity of its neighbors" and stressed that matters concerning territory must be determined solely by Denmark and Greenland.
On defense policy, she clarified her stance regarding nuclear weapons, stating that she does not believe such arms should be stationed on Swedish territory outside of wartime conditions.
Her remarks come as domestic discussions intensify over Sweden’s defense posture and broader security strategy ahead of parliamentary elections set for September 2026.
Separately, she expressed confidence in the collective defense framework of NATO, asserting that the United States would stand by Sweden in the event of an armed attack under Article Five. “There is no doubt about it,” she said.
