Sweden Condemns Treatment of Gaza Flotilla Activists as ‘Indefensible’

(MENAFN) Maria Malmer Stenergard has strongly criticized the treatment of activists detained after a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla was intercepted, describing the reported actions against them as “indefensible.”

Her comments followed reports and circulating footage showing detained members of the flotilla after their vessels were seized by Israeli authorities. According to reports, the activists were part of a maritime aid convoy attempting to reach Gaza when they were detained following an interception in international waters.

Stenergard addressed the issue publicly on social media, where she condemned the conduct attributed to Itamar Ben-Gvir, stating: “The Israeli Security Minister Ben Gvir's actions against detained members of the flotilla are indefensible.”

She further linked the incident to broader policy concerns, adding: “This also confirms the reasonableness of Sweden's push for sanctions listing extremist Israeli ministers.”

The Swedish foreign minister emphasized that all individuals in custody must be treated in accordance with international standards, saying they “must be treated with respect and their rights upheld,” and noted that she had previously raised concerns with her Israeli counterpart about detainee safety and rights.

The comments came after video material attributed to Ben-Gvir showed detained activists with their hands bound and forced to kneel after being taken into custody following the seizure of vessels by Israeli forces.

Separately, organizers of the Global Sumud humanitarian aid flotilla said that all 50 boats in the convoy were intercepted and taken by Israeli authorities.
