Filmmaker Kadir Mayel Unites Engineering Precision and International Perspective in His Work

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, September 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Filmmaker and cinematographer Kadir Mayel is pleased to announce he is continuing to build a multidisciplinary body of work in Los Angeles, drawing on professional production experience, technical training and a life shaped by movement across countries and careers. His work spans narrative filmmaking, cinematography, commercial productions, music videos, branded content, lighting and independent cinema.

Mayel has worked on multiple narrative productions for SkySpire Productions and Dhar Mann Studios. He has also contributed to projects associated with OneRepublic and Microsoft. These assignments have placed him alongside actors, producers, camera crews, lighting teams and other production professionals working within the demands of commercial schedules.

His path to filmmaking began far from Los Angeles. Originally from Aleppo, Syria, Mayel left the country during the war and lived in Turkey before traveling across Europe on foot to reach Sweden. After settling there, he studied electronic and software engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and went on to work professionally as a software engineer.

That experience did not disappear when he changed careers. Instead, engineering became part of the way he prepares for a production and responds to challenges on set. Technical knowledge informs his understanding of camera systems, lighting arrangements, composition and movement. It also supports the planning needed to translate a visual concept into a workable production.

“Engineering taught me to understand how systems work, while filmmaking taught me how people feel,” says Mayel. “Cinematography brings those two sides together for me. Every decision involving light, composition, movement, and perspective has a technical component, but ultimately it must serve the emotion of the story.”

Mayel later relocated to Los Angeles and completed filmmaking studies at the New York Film Academy. The move marked another significant transition, this time from software engineering into full-time creative production. Since then, he has developed experience in visual development, cinematography, lighting, camera work, directing and production leadership.

His approach begins with the practical questions that shape a shoot: how a location can be used, what a lighting plan must accomplish and how the camera should move through a scene. Those choices are then measured against the emotional needs of the story. Precision matters, but it is not treated as an end in itself. The technical elements must support character, atmosphere and perspective.

Mayel’s independent film, The Road, reflects the personal experiences behind that outlook. The dramatic short follows Syrian refugees attempting a dangerous border crossing during winter. Through their journey, the film considers migration, displacement, survival, sacrifice and identity. Mayel served as the film’s director, writer and editor.

Although the subject draws from circumstances familiar to him, the film is centered on the people moving through those circumstances. Its visual language examines uncertainty, physical hardship, and the decisions individuals make when safety remains beyond reach. The project also illustrates how Mayel’s international background continues to shape his interest in character-driven stories about resilience and human connection.

Across independent and professional productions, Mayel works between two disciplines that are often viewed separately. His engineering experience contributes structure, preparation and technical problem-solving. His filmmaking practice requires observation, collaboration and an understanding of how images communicate feeling. Together, these perspectives have become a consistent part of his work in Los Angeles.
